klazomenai

Archeology
Clazomenai is situated in present-day Urla. It was founded on the mainland near the base of the Erythraean peninsula and became part of the Ionian Dodecapolis. It is famous for its painted terracotta sarcophagi dating back to the 6th century BC. Later, worried about Persian invasions, its inhabitants moved the city to an island 400 meters off the coast. Alexander the Great built a pier to connect the island to the mainland. Today, surrounded by olive groves, Clazomenai is also the site of the first olive oil milling system in the world. Most of the artifacts from Clazomenai are exhibited in the Izmir Museum.
