Archeology
Panionium is located at the northern foot of Mount Mykale, where the famous Battle of Mykale between the ancient Greeks and the Persians took place, opposite Samos Island. The delegates of the federation of Ionian city-states convened in Güzelçamlı, known as “Panionium”, at specific intervals to deliberate on pivotal decisions aimed at enhancing the federation’s future, strength, and influence. Panionium has been associated with the Olympic Games (Panionia Festival or Panegyris) that persist to this day. The beginning of this festival probably coincides with the establishment of the first temple here.
