Archaeology

In ancient records, the earliest mention of Priene, a member of the Ionian Union and home to the Panionion—the union’s central hub—is traced back to the mid-7th century BC. Bias, one of the seven famous sages of Antiquity, lived in Priene in the 6th century BC. The city, which became an episcopal center during the Byzantine period, was completely abandoned in the 13th century AD. As the most impeccably preserved model of urban planning from antiquity to the present day, Priene holds paramount significance in unraveling the evolution of urban planning in Anatolia and stands as a pivotal model for contemporary planning studies.
